Drinking a moderate amount of alcohol will not do you any physical or psychological harm. However, for some people, social drinking can lead to heavier drinking, which can cause serious health problems.

Policy Position

A national screening programme for alcohol misuse is not recommended.

This policy was reviewed in Dec 2011 but no significant changes were made. It is due to be considered again in 2014/15, or earlier if significant new evidence emerges.
