Newborn Blood Spot Screening in Northern Ireland

Universal screening of all infants at 5 days of age is offered for phenylketonuria, congenital hypothyroidism and cystic fibrosis.  Screening for homocystinuria and tyrosinaemia is also offered.  Screening for medium chain acyl co-A dehydrogenase deficiency commenced in August 2009 and screening for sickle cell disease will commence in 2010/11.
