Growth

The UK NSC policy on Growth screening in children

More Information

Most children grow at a rate that follows a standard pattern, or growth curve. However, various problems may develop, particularly if a baby fails to put on weight or if an older child's growth slows down or stops.

Policy Position

The Child Health Sub-Group of the UK NSC reported to the UK NSC in December 1999. They recommended a number of actions including "children should have their height and weight measured at around the time of school entry and the 0.4 cut-off for height should be used to initiate referral".

This policy was reviewed in Jul 2006 but no significant changes were made. It is due to be considered again in 2011/12, or earlier if significant new evidence emerges.

Evidence Supporting the Policy
