NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme

More information

The NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme offers a linked programme of:

  • Screening for sickle cell disease for all newborn babies in England
  • Screening during pregnancy for all pregnant women in England

We are also working to develop quality care throughout England for all patients with sickle cell disease and beta thalassaemia major.

Our goals are:

  • To support people to make informed choices during pregnancy and before they have a baby
  • To identify babies with sickle cell disease promptly so they can get the care they need
  • To provide high quality and accessible care throughout England
  • To promote understanding and awareness of sickle cell and thalassaemia

The NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme is the first service in the world to aim to link antenatal and newborn screening. Find out more on the Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia website.
